Field Recording 5: Dizzy Chain

This recording came out of an interest to capture an object that changes sound due to the wind. It didn't take very long before I discovered a thin chain wrapped around a metal pole on North Bartlett Avenue. This was my final recording on March 16, 2009 and it took place at 5:38 p.m. For access to the sound, click here.

Field Recording 4: Can't Stop the War

During my drift, I was trying to be as selective as possible with my sounds. I didn't want to capture the everyday sounds of the city like cars, radios, and buses. However, there was one sound I couldn't avoid and it happened on North Avenue. From outside on the sidewalk, I could clearly hear the voice of our President, Barack Obama, coming from the second floor of an apartment complex. I was able to clip the mics on a wire running up the building to capture the sound. I don't know why this television was at this volume- but it made for an interesting recording. This took place at 4 p.m. on March 16, 2009. The sound can be found here.

Field Recording 3: Cool Water in Surround Sound

After taking several recordings at the lake- I put some of the better moments together to create this soundscape. I have always found the sound of water in motion to be extremely comforting and this recording is no exception. This was the only recording I conducted by holding the microphones in my hands the entire time. This was recording March 16, 2009 at 3:19 p.m. Click here to sail away.

Field Recording 2: Chimes and Children

This location was able to produce one of my favorite scenes during my drift. While recording, I heard bright tones from wind chimes and yelling from children outside. This was a very familiar atmosphere for me and brought back a lot of memories. The contrast of the two sounds really stands out in this excerpt. This recording was conducted March 16th, 2009 at 2:47 p.m. Click here for sound.

Field Recording 1: Water in Alley

One of the goals for my drift was to capture water sounds that were not recorded at the lake or any similar setting. Because this recording was captured on a decent day, I was able to find an alley where a man was washing his car. The large amount of water coming from the hose traveled down the cracks of the alley and into a drain. I placed my microphones nearly inside the drain and was able to capture the hollow sound of drops falling into the drain. This was recorded Monday, March 16 at 1:40 p.m. The recording of this miracle can be found here.

Drift Strategy/Starting Point

For my Drift 1 venture, I will be using dice to determine my path. Each number will represent a direction which will ultimately shape my map and experience.

1-2 = right
3-4 = left
5 = reverse
6 = straight

My starting location will be the intersection of Locust Street and North Newhall Street. I will be rolling again after every two blocks. Let's hope the odds are in my favor.
